Here's Why You Haven't Reached Your Health Goals
There’s a reason why fewer than 40% of people maintain their goals past the first month, and only about 10% who successfully uphold their goals for at least one year. And it’s not because the other 90% of us are hopeless.
Whether it’s practicing CrossFit or pilates, keto or veganism, we often find ourselves struggling to reach our health goals. Why do our plans keep failing?
You’re prioritizing the end result rather than self-mastery.
Self-mastery is the ability to adeptly manage your nervous system, and thus your responses, habits, and thoughts. Self-mastery comes through a loving devotion to do and be your best at all times, in all situations.
Without self-mastery, you will lose weight and regain it because you didn’t address the underlying psychological and physical causes for weight gain.
Without self-mastery, your yoga asana practice becomes ineffective because it becomes another way to heap criticism on yourself, compare yourself to others, and feed old thoughts and habits. If you don’t practice self-mastery, the lack thereof will sabotage your efforts.
What’s worse: you may reach your goal and still feel dissatisfied because you didn’t develop self-compassion, contentment, and gratitude. You’ll keep striving and feeling disappointment with anything that you do.
But when we focus on self-mastery, we have the emotional self-regulation and self-discipline to address the root causes of our unhelpful thoughts and habits. We don’t reach perfection at this point. But we are best equipped to reach our goals and handle any challenges that come our way!
