How to Make Your Affirmations a Reality

Affirmations are great, but recitation alone won’t make them effective. Affirmations can change the way that we think about ourselves, our situations, and the world around us. And when we change the way that we think, we can change our behaviors to bring our dreams to life. But in order for that to happen, we need to accompany affirmations with aligned action.

Starting from scratch? No worries. Let’s learn how to write an affirmation, and then dive into how you can bring it to life!

HOW TO CREATE AN AFFIRMATION

There are calendars, card decks, palm stones, and all sorts of tools to that can give us affirmations. But the best affirmation for you is likely the one that you create based on the yearnings of your heart. Such affirmations are great because your soul knows exactly what you need.

  1. Start with one area of your life that feels unaligned. What’s the situation? What about your mindset (and thus speech, actions and everything else) must change in order for your situation to change?

  2. Write in active voice and present tense: “I eat nutritious food,” instead of, “I will eat nutritious food.

  3. Use positive statements: “I mindfully respond to challenges,” instead of, “I will not blow my fuse.”

  1. Focus on what you can control and how you want to feel, rather than aiming to control others. “I thrive in any environment,” instead of, “My kids keep the house clean and quiet.”

Repeat the phrases as often as you can, at least twice a day.

HOW TO ALIGN YOUR ACTIONS — AND BRING YOUR AFFIRMATIONS TO LIFE!

It can help to focus on one affirmation at a time. That way, you’re dedicating your awareness and energy towards one mental reset at a time.

It can also help to behave in a way that reflects your affirmations. Speak and carry yourself like the affirmation is fulfilled. There’s no need to lie to yourself, but rather frame the truth with your affirmation.

Let’s say that your affirmation is around accumulating wealth. You’re doing well for a few days, then an Instagram ad with a new gadget catches your eye. Rather than saying, “I’m broke. I can’t afford that gadget right now,” you might say, “Though I have wealth, I choose not to spend money on gadgets that I don’t need right now.”

Lastly, avoid self-sabotage: to the extent that you can, avoid the people, places, and situations that would drag you back into old habits. When those old anchors can’t be avoided, give yourself a visual and/or tactile reminder of your affirmation that can help you remember it whenever old habits, thoughts, and words creep in.

For example, I really enjoy gemstones. When one of my affirmations was to enjoy more playtime with my daughter, I wore a citrine bracelet on the same wrist as my Apple Watch. Whenever I checked it, I also saw the reminder to make time for joy and play each day.
