I didn’t always have support or the right tools. When I realized that was missing, it changed everything.
Depression and anxiety aren’t always easy to recognize.
I had no history of mental illness. On paper, I had every reason to be joyful: an attentive husband, supportive family, comfortable career, and a safe home.
But for months, I was miserable. On “good days,” I was anxious, overwhelmed and obsessive. I researched every decision for hours. Selecting a car seat or nipple style stressed me out. Only the most natural birth plan seemed safe–and even that seemed to have life-threatening risks. My family walked on eggshells because any misstep could set me off.
On the worst days, I struggled with suicidal ideation. I also wanted to end the pregnancy, which I thought was killing me due to its complications.
I had never heard of “perinatal depression and anxiety.” (Since I was still pregnant, postpartum depression wasn’t an option.) I was told I just needed to be more grateful; called a monster for considering an abortion; told hell awaited anyone who committed suicide; called a control freak; dismissed and told to pray more.
It was 4 months before anyone bothered to explore why I had changed so drastically during my pregnancy. The changes in me were not moral or ethical failures. They weren’t even my real feelings!
During a prenatal visit, a nurse finally tested me for depression. I passed with flying colors 😒.
With a diagnosis in hand, I had a starting point. But now what?

Prescription drugs, herbs, exercise, therapy, meditation, mindfulness, supplements, hormone treatments, self-help books– no single option was the solution.
I discovered that my wellbeing required a combination of care methods. Through customized self-care, the symptoms began to dissipate. My daughter was turning 3 before I started to feel like myself again.
